Ally LeCaux: Kickin' Cancer

The 'racing scene' in any sport can sometimes be a very narrow realm of the activity itself. How many people jog or ride a bike, without ever intending to enter a race? When one is immersed in the racing world, it's hard to imagine doing that sport and not racing. It's easy to forget how broad the sports are. Cycling and running mean something different to everyone. Thats what makes it all so captivating and inspiring.

Ally LeCaux lost her mom to ovarian cancer. The pain of her loss and the desire to raise awareness needed an outlet. The result was 'Kickin' Cancer', a 1,000 mile kick-scooter ride from Astoria Bridge in Washington state to Golden Gate Bridge in California. She traveled 10-30 miles a day on her kick-scooter and completed her journey, rasing awareness and funding for ovarian cancer and the Lynne Cohen Foundation the whole way.

One in 55 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer during their lives. Only 25% of them have a chance of surviving five years. No effective screening test exists for ovarian cancer, and most cases are diagnosed too late. Knowledge of symptoms and early detection is critical.

Fortunately, we learned of Ally's amazing journey by her telling us that she used her favorite sock, our Woolie Boolie, the entire trip.
The kick-scooter that Ally used is not often seen on roads in America. It's a combination of cycling and running that does not appeal to the masses. That's fine with Ally LeCaux. She is not a typical person. She's what DeFeet calls a 'Driven Sole'. She is out there, doing it her way, making a difference. We're proud to be part of her journey.
