Corn Socks. Another DeFeet First.
DeFeet founder Shane Cooper is always on the lookout for new, environmentally sound fibers to use in his socks. Because DeFeet has always done it's own manufacturing, they have total control of how materials come into and leave their building. This has given DeFeet the ability to lead the hosiery industry in the way that it manages waste - recycling everything possible and making it's suppliers comply with DeFeet standards.
The Eartheatorâ„¢ sock is an example of DeFeet trying to push for acceptance by all companies of a more earth-friendly sock. The Eartheator is certified by Ingeo Fibers. The sock still has nylon in it, which helps the product last longer, but the performance yarns are in fact made from corn fiber. Corn fiber is a 100% annually renewable resource.
Jon Sharp, editor of gearreview.com, wrote about the Eartheator here. Because it is based on the silhouette of the renowned Aireator sock, DeFeet still considers the new corn sock an Aireator. It is available here.
DeFeet would like everyone to know that most of the environmental damage associated with any garment occurs through the washing processes that we use in our homes and the way that a product is eventually discarded. DeFeet strives to make the longest lasting socks available, anywhere. Often, DeFeet socks are able to still be donated to another wearer even after years of hard use - and that's exactly what they'd like you to do.
